Pierre-Marie Dupuy (born October 5, 1946 in Paris) is a French jurist. Since 1981, he has been a law professor atPanthéon-Assas University, where he has been on leave since 2000. From 2000 to 2008, he was Professor of International Law at theEuropean University Institute in Florence. Since 2008, he has worked in the same capacity at theGraduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.[1]

Life

Pierre-Marie Dupuy was born in 1946 as the son of the international law expertRené-Jean Dupuy and graduated from theInstitut d'études politiques de Paris in 1969. He also acquired a diploma in public law at the University of Paris in the same year, and a year later in political science. In 1974, he earned a doctorate and passed theAgrégation, the competitive exam for professorship positions in France.

He then served as professor at theUniversities of Strasbourg andParis Val-de-Marne, and from 1981 at Panthéon-Assas University. Between 2000 and 2008 he held a professorship in international law at the European University Institute in Florence. Since 2008 he is Professor of International Law at the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He has also appeared as a visiting professor at theUniversity of Michigan, at theUniversities of Tokyo andKyoto, at theComplutense University of Madrid and theLudwig Maximilians University Munich. In the years 1984 and 2000 he taught each the General Course at theHague Academy of International Law. Besides his current academic appointment at theGraduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Mr. Dupuy is a member of the International Arbitration Institute (IAI),[2] a Global Agenda Council on the International Legal System for theWorld Economic Forum,[3] a visiting faculty member of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (ADH)[4] as well as a faculty member of the Geneva Center for International Dispute Settlement.[5]

Pierre-Marie Dupuy is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the journal Revue Générale de Droit International Public, and was a founding member of the European Journal of International Law. He is now a member of the Honorary Editorial Board of the journal.[6] HisDroit international public is "one of the best known French international law textbooks" according to the European Society of International Law.[7]

In addition to his native country he worked as a counsel or representative for various states including Equatorial Guinea, Germany, Honduras, Hungary, Italy, Mali, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia before theInternational Court of Justice in The Hague. He acted inter alia as consultant to theOECD, theUnited Nations Environment Programme, theBureau International des Expositions,UNESCO andEutelsat. He is also listed as notable Global-wide Arbitrator in the field of Public International Law by Chambers and Partners. He chairs and is a panel member in a number ofInternational Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) andInternational Chamber of Commerce (ICC) cases. One of his most notable positions in this field was his presidency over the tribunal in theAbyei Arbitration in front of thePermanent Court of Arbitration.[8] The case concerned the determination of the boundaries of the Abyei area betweenNorth andSouth Sudan betweenThe Government of Sudan andThe Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army.

In March 2003, Dupuy was one of the "eminent academic lawyers" who wrote opposing the2003 invasion of Iraq.[9]

Professor Pierre-Marie Dupuy is fluent in French, English, Spanish, Italian and German.
