Although the etymological roots of the word “phutung” is unknown, the word is perhaps related toTibeto-Burmankirati root meaning “subsidiary”. Accordingly, if its kirati root is true, the name may date back to 500 BC during the era whenTibeto-Burman speakingkirati people ruled theKathmandu Valley. Please readthe history of Kathmandu valley for ancient history of the Kathmandu valley.
The village is the source of name for a technological research institute namedPhutung Research Institute[2] for the word rhymes with wordphoton, the name for the smallest packet of electromagnetic energy.
