Philip Michael Brickell (born 1986 or 1987)[1] is a BritishLabour Party politician who has beenMember of Parliament (MP) forBolton West since 2024.[2]

Early life and career

Philip Michael Brickell was born in 1986 or 1987 inBolton,Greater Manchester.[1][3] He was educated atBolton School, anindependent school in Bolton, having received a "subsidised place".[4] He studied Law atDurham University.[3] While at university, he spent a year abroad at theUniversity of Hanover.[4]

Following university, Brickell was employed in the medical records department at theRoyal Bolton Hospital. From 2009 onwards he worked in the financial services industry, most recently withNatWest Group.[3]

Political career

In theMay 2023 local election, Brickell was elected toManchester City Council as aLabour and Co-operative councillor representingBaguley Ward.[5] He had resigned as a councillor by August 2024.[6][7]

He has been a Member of the Labour Party's National Constitution Committee.[8]

In the2024 General Election, Brickell was electedMember of Parliament (MP) forBolton West with 17,363 votes (38.9%) and a majority of 4,945 over the second place Conservative candidate.[9]

In November 2024, Brickell voted in favour of theTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which proposes to legaliseassisted suicide.[10]

On 23 April 2025, Brickell was one of 15 UK Parliamentarians sanctioned by the Russian Federation for what the Russian Government described as 'confrontational' statements.[11]

Personal life

Brickell married Emma Taylor in 2022,[12][13] who he served alongside onManchester City Council.[14]

In his spare time, Brickell is a keen kayaker and has campaigned for better access to waterways, as well as improving water quality on the UK's rivers.[15]
