Phaseolus dumosus (strict botanicPhaseolus × dumosus Macfad.), theyear bean oryear-long bean,[1][2] is an annual to perennial herbaceous vine in the familyFabaceae (legumes), native to a narrow region in the highlands ofGuatemala.[2][3] It is one of the fivePhaseolus domesticates and is similarly used for its beans.[1] It was recently found to be a hybrid between two other cultivated species of Central America,Phaseolus coccineus andP. vulgaris and displays intermediate characteristics.[2] Taxonomically, it was previously categorized asPhaseolus polyanthus andP. coccineus ssp.darwinianus.[4]
This species grows in humid forests and may reach 10 meters in length. It is visited by carpenter bees.[3]
The epithet 'dumosus' means bushy or shrubby.[5]
The plant prefers a cool and humid environment.[1]
