Petrophassa, commonly known as therock pigeons, is a smallgenus of doves in the familyColumbidae native toAustralia, and similar tobronzewing pigeons.
The genus was introduced in 1841 by the English ornithologist and bird artistJohn Gould with thewhite-quilled rock pigeon (Petrophassa albipennis) as thetype species.[2][3] The genus name is a portmanteau of theAncient Greek wordspetros, meaning "rock", andphassa, meaning "pigeon".[4]

They are not closely related toColumba livia, therock dove (also called rock pigeon), a species which includes thedomestic andferal pigeons as well as the wild species native to Europe, North Africa and Asia.
