APeter Boat or Peterboat was a type offishing boat, found principally on theThames Estuary and the adjacent coasts of easternEngland. In legend, the peter boat's origins lie with the boats used to ferry passengers to and from St. Peter's Abbey, theSaxon predecessor toWestminster Abbey inLondon. By the middle of thesecond millennium, a peter boat was a double ended boat of about 12 feet (3.7 m) in length, usually used for fishing.[1][2]
ThePeter Boat Inn, inLeigh-on-Sea near the mouth of the Thames Estuary, is named after this type of fishing boat.[2][3]
