Peter Evans (born 1961) is a New Zealandsailor who has competed in twoOlympic Games and in sixAmerica's Cup campaigns.[1]
Evans was born in 1961[2] and grew up inDevonport. He is a member of the Wakatere Boating Club.[3] He started sailingFrostbites before earning several National Championships inSabots,Starlings andLasers. He then moved to sailing in aEurope before moving to the470 Olympic class.[4][5]
Evans, alongsideSean Reeves, sailed in a 470 at the1984 Summer Olympics, finishing 14th. That year, they also finished third at the470 World Championships in Auckland.
He again representedNew Zealand at the 1988 Summer Olympics in themen's 470 event, this time finishing in 6th place withSimon Mander.
He later coached the sailing team forChinese Taipei at the 1996 Summer Olympics.[4]
In 1990, he joinedNew Zealand Challenge to help with their build up for the1992 Louis Vuitton Cup.[4] Evans won the 1992 Match Racing World Championship.[5]
Evans was part ofNippon Challenge during the1995 Louis Vuitton Cup.
He joinedTeam New Zealand for their2000 America's Cup defence and was in the afterguard during their unsuccessful2003 America's Cup campaign.[6]
Evans joinedAlinghi in 2006, and he was the tactician on board their training boat during the2007 America's Cup.[5] During the2010 America's Cup, Evans controlled the pre-starts on boardAlinghi 5.[7][8]
