Early life

[edit]

Peter Hayden Dinklage was born on June 11, 1969, in theJersey Shore region of New Jersey,[1] to John Carl Dinklage, an insurance salesman, and Diane Dinklage, an elementary school music teacher[5] of German and Irish descent.[6] He grew up in the historicBrookside section ofMendham Township, with his parents and older brother Jonathan. He is the only member of his family withachondroplasia.[7][8][9] He was raisedCatholic.[10]

As a child, Dinklage and his brother performed puppet musicals for people in their neighborhood. He has described his brother Jonathan as "the real performer of the family", saying that his brother's passion for the violin was the only thing that kept him from pursuing acting.[11] Jonathan graduated from theMason Gross School of the Arts atRutgers University-New Brunswick and served as violinist andconcertmaster for the musicalHamilton.[12][13]

Dinklage had his first theatrical success in a fifth-grade production ofThe Velveteen Rabbit. Playing the lead, he was delighted by the audience's response to the show.[14] He attendedDelbarton School, a Catholic preparatory school for boys, where he developed his acting skills.[15] In 1984, he was inspired to pursue an acting career by a production ofSam Shepard's playTrue West.[12]

He attendedBennington College, where he studied for a drama degree and appeared in numerous productions before graduating in 1991.[16][15] He moved to New York City with his friend Ian Bell to build a theater company; failing to pay the rent, they had to move out of their apartment.[12] He subsequently lived in New York for 20 years in Williamsburg and the West Village,[12] then worked six years for a data-processing company before again pursuing a full-time acting career.[17]

Career

[edit]

Early career (1995–2002)

[edit]

Dinklage initially struggled to find acting work, partially because he refused to take the roles typically offered to actors with his condition, such as "elves or leprechauns".[12]He had a credited film debut in the low-budget independent comedy-dramaLiving in Oblivion (1995), where he starred alongsideSteve Buscemi. It tells the story of a director, crew, and cast filming a low-budget independent film in New York City. Dinklage's role was that of a frustrated actor with dwarfism who complains about hisclichéd roles.[18] The next year, he appeared as a building manager in the crime dramaBullet starring rapperTupac Shakur.[19] Even after his well-received performance inLiving in Oblivion, Dinklage could not find someone willing to be his agent. After a recommendation from Buscemi to directorAlexandre Rockwell, Dinklage was cast in the comedy13 Moons (2002). When later interviewed for a theater website, he was asked what his ideal role was, and he replied "to play the romantic lead and get the girl."[12]

Breakthrough (2003–2010)

[edit]

Dinklage found hisbreakthrough playing Finbar McBride, who is a quiet, withdrawn, unmarried man in the 2003Tom McCarthy-directed filmThe Station Agent.[12] According to co-starBobby Cannavale, the film took three years to make and was not at first written with Dinklage in mind. Cannavale said McCarthy "set out to tell a story about a guy who was a train enthusiast who had chosen to isolate himself from the world," but when McCarthy actually started "putting pen to paper" for the screenplay, he decided to write the role for Dinklage. Speaking about the role, Dinklage noted that usually "roles written for someone my size are a little flat"—often either comical or "sort ofLord of the Rings" type characters filled with wisdom; further: "They're not sexual, they're not romantic" and "they're not flawed." What attracted him to the character McCarthy had written was that it was not one of the stereotypical roles people with dwarfism play; rather, McBride has "romantic feelings" as well as "anger and ... flaws."[20] The role earned him theIndependent Spirit Award andScreen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor nominations.[21][22] In theNew York Observer, reviewerAndrew Sarris wrote, "Dinklage projects both size and intelligence in the fascinating reticence of his face."[23] Besides being Dinklage's highest-rated film on the review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes,[24]The Station Agent was modestly successful at the box office, earning over $8 million against its small budget.[25][26]

Dinklage later appeared in thedirect-to-DVD filmTiptoes (2003) withGary Oldman andMatthew McConaughey. The film met with negative reviews, particularly Oldman's role as a person with dwarfism.[27][28] According to Dinklage, the original cut of the film was "gorgeous," but the director was fired shortly after turning it in, and the film was re-cut into a "rom-com with dwarfs."[12] Speaking on the Oldman controversy, Dinklage said, "There was some flak: 'Why would you put Gary Oldman on his knees? That's almost like blackface.' And I have my own opinions about political correctness, but I was just like, It's Gary Oldman. He can do whatever he wants, and I'm so happy to be here."[28]

That year, Dinklage also starred in several off-Broadway productions, such asRichard III.[12][29] Dinklage appeared in the Christmas comedy filmElf as Miles Finch, an irritable children's author who beats up Buddy Hobbs (Will Ferrell) after he mistakes him for an elf.[30] In 2005, he starred in the short-livedCBS science fiction seriesThreshold and appeared as a wedding planner in the comedy filmThe Baxter.[31][32] He also made an appearance in the adventure comedy-dramaLassie as a traveling circus performer.[33]

In 2006, Dinklage co-starred withVin Diesel inFind Me Guilty, a courtroom drama directed bySidney Lumet. The film tells the true story of the longestMafia trial in American history; Dinklage played Ben Klandis, the lead defense attorney.[34] Critical reaction to the film was mostly positive, though it was a commercial failure.[35][36] Writing forChicago Sun-Times, film criticRoger Ebert praised Dinklage's performance, saying that the character he plays stands apart as "concise, articulate and professional."[34] The same year, he portrayed the character Marlowe Sawyer in episodes ofNip/Tuck.[31] He played a fictionalized version of himself in an episode of theHBO seriesEntourage and appeared inNBC's30 Rock as Stewart.[31][37] The same year, Dinklage appeared in the British romantic comedyPenelope playing Lemon, a tabloid reporter.[38] The film received mixed reviews from critics.[39]

Dinklage appeared in the 2007 British comedy filmDeath at a Funeral, reprising the role in the2010 American remake.[40][41][42] Later in 2007, he played the villainousSimon Bar Sinister inUnderdog, which was poorly received, but had some commercial success.[43][44]

Dinklage playedTrumpkin in the 2008 filmThe Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.[45] The film was considered a box office disappointment compared to the first installment,[46][47] with global revenues of $419.7 million,[48] and film critic Bill Gibron described Dinklage's role as a "cutesy stereotype he has tried to avoid."[49] Later that year, he played the title role inUncle Vanya (directed by his wife,Erica Schmidt) inBard College's annualBard SummerScape, theUpstate New York summer stage on theAnnandale-on-Hudson campus.[50] In 2010, he appeared in the Australian movieI Love You Too alongsideBrendan Cowell andPeter Helliar.[51]

Mainstream and critical success (2011–present)

Game of Thrones

[edit]

Between 2011 and 2019, Dinklage portrayedTyrion Lannister in HBO'sfantasydramaGame of Thrones, an adaptation of authorGeorge R. R. Martin'sA Song of Ice and Fire novels.[52]Game of Thrones takes place on the fictional continents ofWesteros andEssos and chronicles the power struggles among noble families as they fight for control of theIron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms.[53] Tyrion is a member ofHouse Lannister, one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Westeros, and uses his status as a Lannister to mitigate the impact of the marginalization and derision he has received all of his life.[54]

In May 2009, he was the first actor to be cast.[55] ShowrunnersDavid Benioff andD. B. Weiss noted that Dinklage, whom they described as funny, smart and witty, was their first choice for the role, as the actor's "core of humanity, covered by a shell of sardonic dry wit, is pretty well in keeping with the character."[12]

Unfamiliar with the source material, Dinklage was cautious in his first meeting with the producers; as a dwarf, "he wouldn't play elves or leprechauns" and was choosy about genre roles. Benioff and Weiss told Dinklage that the character was "a different kind of fantasy little person," or in the actor's words, "No beard, no pointy shoes, a romantic, real human being."[12] Dinklage signed on to play Tyrion before the meeting was half over, in part because, he said, "They told me how popular he was."[12] Martin said of Dinklage's casting, "If he hadn't accepted the part, oh, boy, I don't know what we would have done."[56] The series proved to be a commercial success; it was renewed for multiple seasons and concluded with its eighth season in May 2019.[57]

Dinklage received widespread critical praise for his performance. Matthew Gilbert fromThe Boston Globe said that Dinklage "gives a winning performance that is charming, morally ambiguous, and self-aware."[58] Dan Kois ofThe New York Times noted that Dinklage's performance has made the character "all the more popular."[12] TheLos Angeles Times wrote "In many ways,Game of Thrones belongs to Dinklage."[59]HuffPost called Tyrion the "most quotable" character and "one of the most beloved characters" of the series.[60]

For his performance, he went on to win theEmmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2019, as well as the 2012Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.[61][62] As a result of his performance and increased screen time, Dinklage was giventop billing starting in the series' second season.[63] In 2014, he said onThe Late Show with David Letterman that he had once tried to read the books the show is based upon, but had found them confusing. He joked, "George Martin, our author, is probably going to kill my character soon because I mentioned that."[64] In 2014, Dinklage and four of hisGame of Thrones co-stars became some of thehighest paid actors on television,[65] although sources differ on the actors' per-episode salaries.[a] In 2015, Dinklage lent his voice for the role of Tyrion inGame of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, a video game based on the show.[67]

Dinklage's face was injured in the early 1990s when he was in a "punk-funk-rap" band called Whizzy. He was playing at the nightclubCBGB in New York City, when he was accidentally kneed in the face and started bleeding on the stage.[11] It gave him a scar that runs from his neck to his eyebrow.[citation needed]

In 2017, Dinklage attended theWomen's March demonstration inPark City, Utah to advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues.[citation needed]

Dwarfism

[edit]

Dinklage hasachondroplasia, a genetic disorder which affects bone growth. As a result, he is 4 feet 5 inches (1.35 m) tall, with an average-sized head and torso but shorter than average limbs.[2][3] He has come to accept his condition, but sometimes found it challenging when growing up.[7] In 2003, he said that when he was younger he was often angry and bitter, but that as he got older, he realized he "just [has] to have a sense of humor" to know "that it's not your problem. It's theirs."[29]

When asked in 2012 whether he saw himself as "a spokesman for the rights of little people," Dinklage said: "I don't know what I would say. Everyone's different. Every person my size has a different life, a different history. Different ways of dealing with it. Just because I'm seemingly okay with it, I can't preach how to be okay with it."[12] He has nonetheless been viewed as a role model for people sharing his condition.[120][121]

At the2012 Golden Globe ceremony, when Dinklage won the award forBest Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film, he told the audience that he had been thinking about "a gentleman, his name is Martin Henderson", and suggested that theyGoogle his name.[122] Henderson was a man with dwarfism from Somerset, England, who was badly injured after being tossed by a rugby fan in a bar. Dinklage's words brought media and public attention to the act ofdwarf-tossing, with Henderson's name being trended worldwide on social media. Henderson eventually died of his injuries in 2016, five years after the incident.[123][124] Dinklage turned down offers from talk shows to discuss the topic. He later explained that 20 years earlier he might have accepted the offers, but that he was "a little bit more at peace with things now", and "I said what I wanted to say… I have a friend who says the world doesn't need another angry dwarf."[122]

In January 2022, Dinklage appeared on an episode of theWTF with Marc Maron podcast, where he criticized Disney's portrayal of theSeven Dwarfs in the then-upcominglive-action remake of the 1937 animated filmSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He said that althoughDisney tried to be progressive by castinga Latina actress asSnow White, they had retained thedamaging stereotype of the Seven Dwarfs.[125][126] Disney responded: "We are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period".[127] Fellow dwarf actor and professional wrestlerHornswoggle criticized Dinklage for his comments, claiming he was trying to reduce the number of roles available for dwarf actors.[128]
