Perry Van Bailey is a farmer who is a member of theMississippi House of Representatives representing the 23rd district.[1] House District 23 includes portions of Calhoun, Grenada, Lafayette, and Webster counties. He is a native ofCalhoun County, Mississippi.[2]
Van Bailey ran in a 2023special election to succeedRepublicanCharles Beckett representing the 23rd district in theMississippi House of Representatives. Beckett had resigned to become the director for the Mississippi Public Utilities Staff.[2] Special legislative elections in Mississippi are officiallynonpartisan, though Van Bailey stated he would serve as a Republican.[2] Both Van Bailey andAndrew Stepp, a pharmacy owner,[3] advanced to arunoff, which Van Bailey won by a margin of 7 votes.[4][2]
Van Bailey faced Stepp in a rematch in the Republican primary for the2023 general election to the same seat. Van Bailey lost to Stepp by a margin of 53–47.[3] Following Stepp's death in 2024 Van Bailey was elected to the same seat in a 2025 special election.[5]
