Perry Frank "Francis" Caravello[1] (born November 17, 1963) is an American actor, comedian, and internet personality who is best known as the star of the 2003 movieWindy City Heat and the internet streamPerry Caravello Live.

Early life

[edit]

Originally from the northwest suburbs ofChicago, Caravello was born inPark Ridge and lived there before moving toDes Plaines,Barrington,Palatine, andArlington Heights.[2] He moved with his family toSouthern California in 1974. In 1979, three weeks after getting his driver's license, he was injured in a car accident that put him in acoma for three weeks.[3] As a result of the accident, Caravello sufferedbrain trauma.[4]

Career

[edit]

Caravello started acting and standup comedy around 1988, performing in an aggressive style inspired by his idolSam Kinison, which earned him the nickname "Scary Perry". Early in his career he was trying to get standup spots atThe Comedy Store, when anopen mic host named Don Barris gave him a challenge to shave his own chest onstage with a razor and no soap. Caravello did the stunt and was given a regular spot at the comedy club.[3] This was the beginning of frequent comedic collaborations between Caravello and Barris, along withTony Barbieri (aka "Mole"), all of which were typically at the expense of Perry.[5] Caravello has alleged that in 1992 he was coerced into giving ahandjob to a male casting director, where in turn, he receivedfellatio in order to receive threeSAG vouchers and a role in a movie.[6][7]: 19:00–21:00

In 2003, Caravello starred in theComedy Central reality movieWindy City Heat, directed byBobcat Goldthwait, produced by comediansJimmy Kimmel andAdam Carolla under their companyJackhole Productions (with TV/film producerDaniel Kellison), and written by Barris and Barbieri.[8] All three co-starred as well.[3] The movie was one elaborate prank on Caravello who was under the impression he had landed his first starring role in a major motion picture.[9] The movie followed him from the beginning being cast in the picture to the conclusion of the "one-night only" premiere where he was awarded a trophy for his outstanding work. It is speculated that Caravello earned at least $50,000 for his role in the film.

He had roles in theAdult Swim showsHot Package andSmiling Friends, as well asDerek and Simon: The Show, andVirtuosity and was also an extra inAustin Powers in Goldmember where he can be seen multiple times during the prison rap scene.[10]

AfterWindy City Heat, Caravello started working with Richard Heene on a project calledPsyience Detectives in which they playedstorm chasing detectives. The project ended during production in 2006 when the two men got involved in a physical altercation while filming.[11] After theBalloon boy hoax perpetrated by Richard Heene, Caravello made frequent TV appearances in which he was interviewed in regard to Heene's character. He was then invited onJimmy Kimmel Live!, where he was lampooned for taking advantage of his "15 minutes of fame" in light of the incident.[12][13]

In 2010, Caravello, Barris and Barbieri started a weekly comedypodcast calledThe Big 3 Podcast, onAdam Carolla'sACE Broadcasting Network.[7] In 2011 the show moved to Barris' own network,[14] before ending in April 2015.[15] Caravello has spoken onSimply Don The Podcast from 2014 through 2020.[16]

Perry was prank-called byThe Jerky Boys on the track "Perry's Slacks" on the 2020 albumThe Jerky Boys.[17]

Perry Caravello Live

[edit]

In November 2020, Caravello launched his own live stream on the platformTwitch (and later expanded toYouTube) with the help of his publicist Tom Brennan. The following Caravello obtained fromWindy City Heat proved to make his streaming channels successful and began streaming 3 to 4 days a week.[18][19] This also brought him a new audience.[20]

The channel's main form of comedic content comes in the form of the stream's audience sendingtroll messages in the form of text to speech and media share donations, along with delivery items of food that Perry purposefully doesn't like, Perryraging at, and sometimes occasionally physicallyassaulting, Tom and/or whoever are guests on certain streams, and Perry being paid certain amounts of money to do numerous embarrassing stunts, tasks, and dares.

Mousetrap lawsuit

[edit]

On June 1, 2007, Caravello filed a lawsuit alleging that Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, andJohnny Knoxville had promised him ten million dollars if he agreed to place his genitals in a mousetrap during an episode ofThe Adam Carolla Show.[21] The lawsuit was initiated after Caravello suffered an injury during the stunt, did not receive the promised payment, and was not provided with an account of profits and royalties from DVD sales ofWindy City Heat.[22][23]

2020 presidential campaign

[edit]

In a May 2019 episode ofSimply Don The Podcast, Caravello revealed that he would be running forPresident of the United States in the2020 U.S. presidential election.[24] Caravello has stated that he would run as an independent on a platform that included abolishing money, building a wall across theCanada–United States border, providing freeuniversal healthcare, and legalizingmedical marijuana. He also supported abolishinggay marriage, criminalizinghomosexuality, and said he would like to turnSan Clemente Island into a gayprison.[25] He announced he had abandoned his run (which he claimed was a joke) on July 18, 2020.[26]
