Miguel Ángel 'Periko' Alonso Oyarbide (born 1 February 1953) is a Spanish formerfootballmidfielder. He was also amanager.
He played mainly forReal Sociedad (five years) andBarcelona (three) in his professional career, achievingLa Liga totals of 273 matches and 42 goals in ten seasons.[2]
ASpanish international for two years, Alonso represented the country at the1982 World Cup.
Born inTolosa,Gipuzkoa, Alonso played professionally forReal Sociedad,Barcelona andSabadell. With the first, he was instrumental in back-to-backLa Liga conquests (averaging 32 games and five goals in those seasons and not starting only once), and won 19 of his 20caps forSpain in the process; his debut came on 24 September 1980 in afriendly withHungary (2–2), inBudapest.[3]
In1982–83, having retired from the national team following the unsuccessfulhome World Cup campaign, Alonso joined Barcelona,[4] being used relatively little during most of his spell. He won the league in hisfinal year, but only appeared twice, eventually retiring in 1988 withBarça neighbours Sabadell, helping the club achieve promotion fromSegunda División in hisfirst season and scoring 12 goals – a career-best – inhis second, as the modestCatalans ranked 17th after the first 34 matches, but eventually managed to avoid a drop after finishing third in theirrelegation group in the second stage.[5]

Alonso started working as a manager immediately after retiring, mainly in theBasque Country. In 2000, after an unsuccessful spell atHércules (second division,relegation),[7] he had a chance to coach Real Sociedad but only lasted ten games, retiring from the sport subsequently.[8][9]
Alonso's sons,Mikel andXabi, were also footballers and midfielders. Both followed in their father's footsteps representing Real Sociedad, and the latter also played with great success forLiverpool,Real Madrid,Bayern Munich and the Spain national team.[10][11]
