Theperichondrium (fromGreekπερί,peri, 'around' andχόνδρος,chondros, 'cartilage') is a layer ofdense irregular connective tissue that surrounds thecartilage of developing bone. It consists of two separate layers: an outer fibrous layer and innerchondrogenic layer. The fibrous layer containsfibroblasts, which producecollagenous fibres. The chondrogenic layer remains undifferentiated and can formchondroblasts. Perichondrium can be found around the perimeter ofelastic cartilage andhyaline cartilage.
Perichondrium is a type of irregular collagenous ordinary connective tissue, and also functions in the growth and repair of cartilage. Perichondrium containstype I collagen[1] andtype XII collagen.[2]
