Genera

Perdicinae is apolyphyletic former subfamily of birds in thepheasant family,Phasianidae, regrouping thepartridges,Old World quails, andfrancolins.[1] Although this subfamily was consideredmonophyletic and separated from thepheasants, tragopans, junglefowls, andpeafowls(Phasianinae) till the early 1990s,[1][2]molecular phylogenies have shown that these two subfamilies actually constitute only one lineage. For example, somepartridges (Perdix genus) are more closely affiliated topheasants, whereasOld World quails andpartridges from theAlectoris genus are closer tojunglefowls.[3][4] Due to this, the subfamily Perdicinae is no longer recognized by theInternational Ornithological Congress, with the species being split among 3 subfamilies.[5]

Perdicinae is anon-migratory Old World group. These are medium-sized birds, and are native toEurope,Asia,Africa, and theMiddle East. They are ground-nesting seed-eaters. The subfamily includes thepartridges, thesnowcocks, thefrancolins, thespurfowl and theOld World quail.
