Apentapolis (fromGreekπεντα-penta-, 'five' andπόλιςpolis, 'city') is a geographic and/or institutional grouping of five cities. Cities in the ancient world probably formed such groups for political, commercial and military reasons, as happened later with theCinque Ports in England.
