
Peixinhos da horta ([pɐjˈʃĩɲuʒðɐˈɔɾtɐ]) is a traditional dish inPortuguese cuisine. The name of the dish is literally translated as "little fish from the vegetable garden", as it resembles small pieces of colorful fish.[1] It was introduced toJapan by Portuguese sailorsAntonio da Mota andFrancisco Zeimoto in the sixteenth century.[2][3][4] The dish later gave rise totempura, a typical Japanese dish.[5][6]
Peixinhos da horta is usually prepared withgreen beans in a wheat-flour-based batter that are then deep-fried.[7] Other vegetables such asbell peppers andsquash are also used.
