ThePeiros (Greek:Πείρος, formerly alsoKamenitza andAchelous[1]) is ariver in the central and the northwestern parts ofAchaea,Greece. It is 42.6 km (26.5 mi) long.[2]
The Peiros is the second longest river in Achaea, afterSelinountas.[2] It rises in the northeastern part of theErymanthos mountains, near the villageLakkomata. It passes through the municipal units ofFarres,Olenia andDymi. It empties into theGulf of Patras between the townsAlissos andKato Achaia. There are several bridges over the Peiros, including the bridges of theGreek National Road 9/E55 (Patras -Pyrgos -Kyparissia) andOSE'sPatras–Kyparissia railway line. Two ancient cities were situated near the river:Olenos andPharae.
Its most important tributaries are theParapeiros (also known asTytheus) and theSerdini.
