Luís Pedro Barros Barny Monteiro (born 20 July 1966), known asBarny, is a Portuguese retiredfootballer who played as acentral defender, and themanager of Egyptian clubEl Gouna FC.
Born inPorto, Barny played 332Primeira Liga games over the course of 13 seasons, representing mainly hometown'sBoavista FC. After three years of intermittent use as a youngster and a two-year spell withC.F. Estrela da Amadora,[1][2] he returned to his main club, helping it to three top-four finishes during his spell there – in between, he spent the1992–93 campaign withSporting CP, being first-choice.
Barny retired in June 1999 at the age of 33, after three top-flight seasons withC.F. Os Belenenses and one withC.D. Aves, in his first and onlysecond division experience. He won twoPortuguese Cups from 1990 to 1992, with Estrela and Boavista.
Barny started coaching two years after retiring. In 2004 he rejoined Boavista as an assistant, acting asinterim in the2004–05 and2006–07 seasons[3] for a total of four matches (one draw and three losses).
From February 2008 to June 2009, Barny was in charge ofS.C. Espinho of thethird level.[4] He then resumed his assistant career in several teams and countries, mostly under compatriotManuel José.[5][6]
Subsequently, Barny worked in theEgyptian Premier League. He ledIsmaily SC[7] to asecond-place finish andthe semi-finals of theEgypt Cup in his first year,[8] and was appointed atEl Gouna FC late into 2019.[9]
