Pedachtoë orPedachthoe, also known asHeracleopolis orHerakleioupolis (Ancient Greek:Ἡρακλειούπολις), was a town ofancient Pontus, inhabited duringRoman andByzantine times.[1] It was assigned to the late Roman province ofArmenia Prima,[2] in which it became the seat of an archbishop. No longer a residential see, it remains atitular see of theRoman Catholic Church.[3]
Its site is tentatively located nearAkşehir inAsiatic Turkey, though others locate it atGüneykaya, Yıldızeli.[1][2][4]
In ancient times it contained the sanctuary ofAthenogenes of Pedachtoë.
This extensive version of the Martyrdom of Athenogenes is the earliest extant textual expression of a cult based at the village of Pedachthoe (modern Güneykaya, in Ottoman times known as Bedohtun) in the mountainous region north of Sebasteia/Sebaste (modern Sivas).
