Paulo Jorge Vieira Alves (born 5 May 1981), known asPaulo Jorge, is a Portuguese formerfootballer who played mainly as aright midfielder.

He amassedPrimeira Liga seasons of 103 games and six goals over six seasons, representing in the competitionBoavista,Benfica,Marítimo,Gil Vicente andBelenenses. He also played professionally in Spain and Saudi Arabia.

Early career and Boavista

Paulo Jorge was born inMaia,Porto District. He spent six seasons in theSegunda Liga with his hometown clubF.C. Maia, including loan spells in the lower leagues withPedrouços A.C. andF.C. Infesta, then signed a three-year contract withBoavista F.C. for2005–06.[2][3] In his one year at theEstádio do Bessa, he scored seven goals in all competitions, including the equaliser in a 1–1 home derby draw againstFC Porto on the final day; the team needed a win toqualify for theUEFA Cup.[4]

Benfica

Paulo Jorge joinedS.L. Benfica in July 2006, on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.[5] With theLisbon side, he started inUEFA Champions League matches againstFK Austria Wien (both legs of thethird qualifying round)[6][7] andF.C. Copenhagen andManchester United (group stage).[8][9] His only goal came on 1 October, opening a 4–1 home win overC.D. Aves.[10]

However, after having appeared sparingly during theleague campaign, Paulo Jorge was loaned toMálaga CF in Spain, whom achievedLa Liga promotion in2008. He shared teams with compatriotsEliseu andHélder Rosário during his stint,[11] scoring once for theAndalusians to open an eventual 2–1 home loss toGimnàstic de Tarragona on 10 May 2008.[12]

Later career

Paulo Jorge was definitely sold in mid-July 2008, and joinedC.S. Marítimo on a two-year deal, alongsideManú andJoão Coimbra who also transferred from theEstádio da Luz.[13] He scored his first competitive goal for theMadeirans on 4 January 2009 during a 4–1 home victory overF.C. Paços de Ferreira,[14] and spent most ofthe season as aright-back.[15]

In June 2010, Paulo Jorge and former Benfica teammateNuno Assis joinedAl-Ittihad Club (Jeddah) of theSaudi Professional League, under their compatriot managerManuel José.[16] At the start of 2013, he returned to his country's top flight, being signed byPaulo Alves atGil Vicente FC.[17]

Remaining in the same league, Paulo Jorge agreed to a one-year contract atC.F. Os Belenenses in July 2013.[18] After seven games, he was released by mutual consent on 15 January.[19]
