Paul Neary (18 December 1949 – 10 February 2024) was a Britishcomic book artist, writer and editor.
His first work was forWarren Publishing in the 1970s before working withDez Skinn atMarvel UK as well as work for2000 AD. He later became editor-in-chief of Marvel UK in the 1990s but is now best known for inkingBryan Hitch's work onThe Ultimates forMarvel Comics.
His first published work was inWarren'santhology title,Eerie, working on various stories and series including "Hunter" and its sequels, before drawing variousFuture Shocks for2000AD for various writers, includingAlan Moore.
In 1979 he started working onHulk Weekly forMarvel UK which had just been drastically revamped byDez Skinn. During this time he drew various strips for Marvel UK, includingHulk andNick Fury, plus helping new artists such asAlan Davis.
During the early 1980s he createdMadman forDez Skinn'sWarrior before becoming a regularinker forAlan Davis's work forDC Comics. Their most notable work at this time being a run drawingBatman forDetective Comics.
Neary became closely associated with Davis, inking his work from titles such asUncanny X-Men toCaptain Britain. Their working partnership lasted until his death.
Neary became editor-in-chief of Marvel UK from c. 1990–1993,[1] helping launch a number of US-sized titles in addition to the company's ongoing UK range. This began withDeath's Head II and was followed by titles such asHell's Angel (changed toDark Angel after a copyright battle with theHells Angels),Warheads,Digitek andMotormouth (laterMotormouth andKillpower). Sales of the comics were initially high but over-expansion soon brought an end to Marvel UK's US line, withPanini Comics buying the company's assets, includingDoctor Who Magazine.
Neary had been concentrating on inking since then. He has inkedBryan Hitch's work onThe Authority and regularly worked with Hitch onThe Ultimates forMarvel Comics.
Paul Neary died after a long illness on 10 February 2024, at the age of 74.[2]
