Paul Goodwin (born 2 September 1956) is anEnglishconductor and formeroboist.[1]

Oboist

Goodwin was born inWarwick, England. He studied oboe withJanet Craxton. Following his graduation from theUniversity of Nottingham with a degree incomposition, he specialized in contemporary oboe techniques and thebaroque oboe at theGuildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He later continued his studies inVienna with Jurg Schäftlein.

Goodwin played historical oboes. He was the principal oboist ofthe English Concert and theLondon Classical Players and has recorded more than 20 solo and concerto records.

Conductor

In 1996, Goodwin transitioned from playing the oboe to conducting. He subsequently studied conducting in Helsinki withJorma Panula. He held positions with TheAcademy of Ancient Music as an associate conductor, and theEnglish Chamber Orchestra as the principal guest conductor.

He was the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of theCarmel Bach Festival in California (2010–2021),[2] Principal Guest Conductor of Capella Aquileia in Germany and Director of the Historical Performance Programme at theEscuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid.

For 11 years, Goodwin was the Associate Conductor of the Academy of Ancient Music, touring and making recordings ofHeinrich Schütz' choral music, Mozart's singspielZaide, and music by SirJohn Tavener that Goodwin commissioned for theAAM. Three of these CDs have been nominated forGrammy (US) andGramophone Awards (UK). Subsequent AAM commissions included pieces byDavid Bedford,John Woolrich andThea Musgrave.

Goodwin was one of the principal guest conductors with theKammerorchester Basel, where he performed a wide range of repertoire fromJ. S. Bach toMark Anthony Turnage, on both modern and period instruments. Goodwin was the Principal Guest Conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra for six years, collaborating with artists such asKiri Te Kanawa,Joshua Bell,Maria João Pires,Mstislav Rostropovich andMagdalena Kožená. Goodwin has also recorded CDs ofAmy Beach and Elgar'sNursery Suite forHarmonia Mundi, France.

Goodwin has conducted orchestras including theBBC Philharmonic, theHallé Orchestra, theCity of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra theBBC National Orchestra of Wales andScottish Chamber Orchestra.

Goodwin has worked on educational projects with theNational Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands theSpanish National Youth Orchestra, theOrchestra Giovanile Italiana, theJunge Deutsche Philharmonie, theNew World Symphony in the USA, and with the orchestras of theRoyal College of Music andRoyal Academy of Music, and theRoyal Conservatory of The Hague. Goodwin was conductor of theQueen Elisabeth Competition Brussels for nine years. He has recorded Prokofiev'sPeter and the Wolf and Chappell'sPaddington Bear with the Munich Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Goodwin was awarded theHandel Prize of the City ofHalle (Saale) in 2007[3] in recognition of his services to performances of works byGeorge Frideric Handel.

As a conductor, Goodwin has recorded CDs of Handel's operasLotario andRiccardo Primo, and his oratorioAthalia, as well as discs ofSchutz,Britten,Elgar,John Tavener,Richard Strauss,Mozart,J. S. Bach,Kozeluch andAmadeus Hartmann.
