Paul J. Franklin is an Englishvisual effects supervisor who has worked with visual effects since the 1990s. Franklin won theAcademy Award for Best Visual Effects and theBAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects forInception (2010), and won a second Academy Award for Best Visual Effects forInterstellar (2014). He shared the wins withAndrew Lockley,Peter Bebb, andChris Corbould. Franklin has also been nominated for an Academy Award forThe Dark Knight (2008).[1] He was nominated for BAFTA Awards forBatman Begins,The Dark Knight (2008), andThe Dark Knight Rises (2012).[2]

Background

Franklin was born inCheshire, England.[3] He was educated atSandbach School in Cheshire from 1977 to 1984.[4] He attended the South Cheshire College (Crewe), part of the formerMid Cheshire College inNorthwich, for a year, and then gained a place at theRuskin School of Art atOxford University, where he was a member ofSt John's College, to studyfine art.[5] At Oxford he had his first experience of filmmaking, frequently collaborating with directorBen Hopkins, and began to experiment with the emerging new medium ofcomputer animation. He graduated in 1989.[6] He worked two jobs as a videotape editor and then began a career in computer graphics and animation at Psygnosis (nowStudio Liverpool) in the early 1990s.[7] After several years at the Moving Picture Company in London he and a group of colleagues founded the visual effects companyDouble Negative in 1998 with financing fromPolyGram Filmed Entertainment. He headed the 3D effects for Double Negative's first filmPitch Black (2000).[7]

Franklin was an undergraduateexternal examiner atBournemouth University for 4 or 5 years and also gave visiting practitioner lectures at BU's Media School.[8] In 2012, he received anhonorary degree from Bournemouth.[9]
