Patrick Olivelle is anIndologist.[1][2] Aphilologist and scholar ofSanskrit Literature whose work has focused onasceticism,renunciation and thedharma, Olivelle has been Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Religions in the Department of Asian Studies at theUniversity of Texas at Austin since 1991.[1][3]

Early life

Olivelle was born inSri Lanka.[3] He received a B.A. (Honours) in 1972 from theUniversity of Oxford, where he studiedSanskrit,Pali andIndian religions withThomas Burrow andR.C. Zaehner.[3] He received his Ph.D. from theUniversity of Pennsylvania in 1974 for a thesis containing the critical edition and translation of Yadava Prakasa'sYatidharmaprakasa under the supervision ofLudo Rocher.[3] Between 1974 and 1991, Olivelle taught in the Department of Religious Studies atIndiana University Bloomington.[1]
