Patrick Beattie Mynhardt (12 June 1932 – 25 October 2007) was a well-knownSouth Africanfilm andtheatreactor.[1] He appeared in over 150 stage plays in South Africa and England, 100 local and international films, TV plays and serials as well as an opera. He died inLondon, where he was performing in his one-man showBoy from Bethulie at theJermyn Street Theatre in theWest End.[2]
The son of Johannes Tobias Mynhardt, a district surgeon and Elizabeth Beattie, an Irish emigrant, Patrick was born inBethulie in theFree State.[3] He matriculated fromDe La Salle College inEast London. He studied drama atRhodes University before joining the National Theatre Organisation in 1953 and touringSouth Africa. In 1954, he moved toLondon to attend theCentral School of Speech and Drama.[2] Performing on stage and for theBBC in Britain, he worked with actors includingPeter Sellers,Burt Lancaster,Anthony Quinn,Richard Harris,Peter O'Toole,Michael Caine andJudi Dench. At the end of 1960 he returned toSouth Africa.[4]
