Thesubcallosal area (parolfactory area of Broca) is a small triangular field on the medial surface of the hemisphere in front of thesubcallosal gyrus, from which it is separated by theposterior parolfactory sulcus; it is continuous below with theolfactory trigone, and above and in front with thecingulate gyrus; it is limited anteriorly by theanterior parolfactory sulcus.
The subcallosal area is also known as "Zuckerkandl's gyrus", forEmil Zuckerkandl.[1]
Theparahippocampal gyrus, subcallosal area, andcingulate gyrus have been described together as theperiarcheocortex.[2]
The "subcallosal area" and "parolfactory area" are considered equivalent inBrainInfo,[3] but inTerminologia Anatomica they are considered distinct structures.
