Para-Romani are variousmixed languages of non-Indo-Aryan linguistic classification containing considerableadmixture from theRomani language. They are spoken as the traditional vernacular ofRomani communities,[1] either in place of, or alongside, varieties of the Romani language. Some Para-Romani languages have no structural features of Romani at all, taking only the vocabulary from Romani.[2]
Reflecting the northernIndian subcontinent origin (in regions that are today part ofIndia andPakistan) of the Romani people, who for the last millennium have resided in dispersed locations predominantly throughoutEurope, the linguistic makeup of most Para-Romani languages is based onIndo-European languages, except forLaiuse Romani (which is based onEstonian) andErromintxela (which is based onBasque of theBasque region of Spain and France, separate from theCaló Iberian Romani language ofSpain andPortugal based on theRomance languages of Iberia).
The phenomenon of Para-Romani languages is akin toJewish languages (other thanHebrew) which are spoken by different communities of theJewish diaspora and are heavily influenced byHebrew, such asYiddish (Judaeo-German) amongAshkenazi Jews,Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish) amongSephardic Jews, orYevanic (Judaeo-Greek),Italkian (Judaeo-Italian), variousJudeo-Arabic languages, etc.
