Enrique Gayoso Magalona Jr. (January 22, 1922 – April 7, 1998),[1] professionally known asPancho Magalona, was a Filipino actor from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Early life

Born Enrique Gayoso Magalona Jr. inBacolod,Negros Occidental, he was the son ofEnrique B. Magalona Sr., who was then a municipal president ofSaravia (now renamed in his honor) and a future Senator.[3]

Career

Magalona and his wifeTita Duran, appeared in numerousSampaguita Pictures films. The couple was the most popular love team in films during the late 1940s and 1950s.[4] He was the father ofFrancis Magalona (1964–2009), Ma. Susan Magalona-Contreras, Vicky, Victor (married to Ma. Angeles), Henry, Popeye "Pye", Malot, Maricar Magalona-Martinez, and Martin. He also co-starred on some Hollywood movies that were shot in the Philippines, such asThe Hook (withKirk Douglas) andMerrill's Marauders (withJeff Chandler).[5]

In 1967, Magalona ran forgovernor of Rizal under theLiberal Party but was defeated by incumbent governorIsidro Rodriguez;Neptali Gonzales, Magalona's running mate, managed to be elected vice governor.[6][7]

Awards

He won the FAMAS Award for Best Actor in 1958 forHanggang sa Dulo ng Daigdig and is best remembered for playing the character Simoun in the film version ofJosé Rizal's novelEl Filibusterismo.

Death

A heavy smoker, he suffered from emphysema and died at theLung Center of the Philippines on April 7, 1998. He was buried in Loyola Memorial Park, Sucat,Parañaque beside his wifeTita Duran.
