Pan meino (orpan de mej inLombard) is a typicalLombarddessert, especially widespread in the provinces ofMilan,Monza,Lodi,Lecco, andComo.
It is a small sweetflatbread flavored withelderflower.
There are two legends regarding the invention ofpan meino: the first says thatpan meino was invented in the first half of the 14th century by the inhabitants of theMilanesecountryside to celebrate the defeat against thebrigands, then present throughout the territory, byLuchino Visconti.
The second describespan meino as the accompaniment to the cups of cream once offered bymilkmen on the day ofSaint George, their patron, April 23, the day on whichpan meino is traditionally prepared currently.[1][2] The recipe forpan meino calls for flour mixed with eggs, milk, cream, butter, sugar, and elderflower. The mixture is given a flattened circular shape to then move on to baking.[3][4]
