Owens Wells is anunincorporated community inHolmes County,Mississippi, United States. Owens Wells is located nearMississippi Highway 12 and is approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) east ofLexington and approximately 8 miles (13 km) west ofDurant. The community was once a stop on theYazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad.[2]

History

Owens Wells was once home to amineral spring and resort.[3] A hotel was built near the spring that was frequented by citizens of theDelta.[4] The resort could accommodate up to 150 guests and the springs were purported to cure "torpid liver,malaria, chills and fever, indigestion,dyspepsia, biliousness, general debility, constipation, all forms of kidney trouble...andpiles."[5] The spring was still producing usable mineral water in 1915.[6]

A post office operated under the name Owens Wells from 1889 to 1919.[7]

In 1910, GovernorEdmond Noel gave a speech in Owens Wells that summarized his tenure as governor until that point.[8]
