Washington is astate in thePacific Northwest region of theUnited States, and is named afterGeorge Washington, the firstPresident of the United States (it is the only U.S. state named after a president). Washington was carved out of the western part ofWashington Territory which had been ceded by Britain in 1846 by theOregon Treaty as settlement of theOregon Boundary Dispute. It was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state in 1889. The state's population at the2010 United States census was 6,724,540. Washington is often calledWashington State or thestate of Washington to distinguish it fromWashington, D.C.
