Singapore – asovereignrepublic comprising the main island of Singapore and smaller outlying islands which are located at the southern tip of theMalay Peninsula inSoutheast Asia.[1] Singapore lies 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of theequator, south of theMalaysian state ofJohor and north ofIndonesia'sRiau Islands and is in-between theStraits of Malacca and theSouth China Sea.

Singapore is one of the threecity-states in the world, along withMonaco and theVatican City, and is the only one with full self-governance, its own currency, and a significant military force;The Economist refers to Singapore as the "world's only fully functioning city-state".[2] It is the second smallest nation inAsia by land area, ahead ofMaldives and similar toBahrain.
