TheCathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, commonly known asJolo Cathedral, is aRoman Catholiccathedral inJolo,Sulu and the seat of theApostolic Vicariate of Jolo.[2] The cathedral is located inJolo, a volcanic island in Sulu Province of theBangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in thePhilippines. The cathedral is dedicated to theVirgin Mary under the titleOur Lady of Mount Carmel.

Attacks

On January 10, 2010, agrenade thrown at the tombs of Francis Joseph McSorley andBenjamin de Jesus, two formerbishops, caused no injuries but shattered the windows.[3] The blast occurred an hour before amass was scheduled to be celebrated. There were no injuries.[4]

On May 20, 2010, a grenade exploded in front of the cathedral at 9:30 in the evening. The cathedral suffered minor damage.[5] There were no reported fatalities or injuries.[6]

2019 bombings

On January 27, 2019, the cathedral was bombed during a mass, killing at least 18 people and injuring 82 others.[7] TheIslamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.[8]

The church building was repaired following the attacks. It wasreconsecrated in July 2019.[9]

2020 bombing

On August 24, 2020, two bombings occurred inJolo, resulting in the deaths of sevensoldiers, sixcivilians, onepolice officer and a bomber, while 75 other people were wounded. One of the two attacks was carried out by afemale suicide bomber near the cathedral.[10]
