
Ottokar Lorenz (17 September 1832 – 13 May 1904) was an Austrian-Germanhistorian andgenealogist. He was born inIglau (now Jihlava, Czech Republic) and died inJena. He was the father of chemistRichard Lorenz (1863-1929).
He studiedphilology, history and philosophy in Vienna, where his instructors includedHermann Bonitz,Joseph Aschbach andAlbert Jäger. From 1861 to 1885, Lorenz was a professor of history at theUniversity of Vienna, being appointedrector in 1880.[1] Afterwards, he was a professor at theUniversity of Jena.
He was a founder of modern "scientificgenealogy". Some of his better written efforts are as follows:
