Born inAmérica,Buenos Aires Province, Ustari arrived inIndependiente's youth system at the age of 14. The untimely deaths of Emiliano Molina andLucas Molina – both playing in his position – propelled him to the first team sooner than expected,[2] and he made hisPrimera División debut on 5 October 2005 in a 2–0 win againstNewell's Old Boys,[3] remaining first choice with theAvellaneda side in the following tournaments, under bothJorge Burruchaga andMiguel Ángel Santoro (both former players with the club, the latter also a goalkeeper).[4]
On 10 June 2007, Ustari scored from apenalty kick againstQuilmes, also leaving the pitch injured[5] and going on to missthe year'sCopa América. One month later, he signed forGetafe in Spain for€4 million,[6] teaming up with his compatriot and goalkeeperRoberto Abbondanzieri. His official debut came on 26 September 2007, in a 2–1La Liga loss atValencia.[7] He was first-choice in theirrunner-up run in theCopa del Rey, including in the3–1 final defeat against the same opposition.[8][9][10]
Ustari struggled during his spell inMadrid, due to inconsistent performances and several injury problems.[11][12] On 17 July 2012, following a 14-month lay-off due to the latter, he terminated his contract which still had another year running.[13]
On 25 July 2012, Ustari returned to his country and joinedBoca Juniors.[14] He moved back to Spain one year later, however, withAlmería which had justreturned to the top flight.[15]
On 21 January 2014, after only fourCopa del Rey matches to his credit,[16] Ustari was released by theAndalusians and signed a six-month contract withSunderland.[17] He made his debut for his new team four days later, keeping aclean sheet in a 1–0 home win overKidderminster Harriers in thefourth round of theFA Cup.[18] He was also in goal in the following game in the tournament, and the result was the same againstSouthampton,[19] and was an unused substitute on 2 March in thefinal loss toManchester City atWembley Stadium.[20]
On 6 July 2014, Ustari returned to his homeland again to play forNewell's Old Boys, agreeing to a one-and-a-half-year deal.[21] On 16 December of the following year, he switched to the MexicanLiga MX after signing forAtlas.[22] On 2 November 2017, in the dying minutes of the 1–1 home draw withTigres UANL while at the service of the latter club, he suffered an horrific injury to his left knee after kicking a long ball forward,[23] going on to be sidelined for nearly two years.[24]
Ustari took his game to theUruguayan Primera División in July 2019, with thefree agent signing withLiverpool Montevideo.[25] He subsequently representedPachuca in the Mexican top division,[26]Audax Italiano ofChilean Primera División[27] andMajor League Soccer'sInter Miami.[28]
Ustari was the undisputed starter for Pachuca throughout the vast majority of his spell, where he won the2022 Apertura and was also awardedcaptaincy.[29][30] At Inter, he became first-choice at the start of the2025 season overDrake Callender.[31]
In the opening match of the2025 FIFA Club World Cup againstAl Ahly, Ustari produced a number of saves, including a penalty fromTrézéguet, in a goalless draw; managerJavier Mascherano praised his performance afterwards, saying: "Oscar kept us alive in the first half, not just on the penalty kick but two or three other great saves".[32][33]
Ustari played all the matches for theArgentina under-20 team that won the2005 FIFA World Youth Championship.[34] On 15 May 2006, he was named bysenior side coachJosé Pekerman to the2006 FIFA World Cup squad alongside his future Getafe teammate Abbondanzieri, being an unused member.[35]
Ustari won his first fullcap on 22 August 2007, featuring the entire 2–1friendly loss inNorway.[36][37] He also started thevictorious campaign of theunder-23 team at the2008 Summer Olympics inBeijing,[38] but suffered a severe foot injury in the quarter-finals against theNetherlands, being sidelined for eight months.[39]
