OrionVM sells a wholesale cloud infrastructure platform forpublic, private andhybrid cloud deployments. Vendors canwhite-label the platform for resale, or for internal use.[23] Prominent resellers include:

Technology

[edit]

OrionVM uses theXen hypervisor tovirtualise multiplemachines (referred to as "instances") on the same hardware.[21]Linux instances useparavirtualisation for reduced overhead by default, withWindows Server being deployed using hardware-assisted virtualisation (HVM).

Traditionalvirtual private server andinfrastructure as a service providers consolidatestorage into astorage area network, which is limited byEthernet network speeds and best-effort reliability. OrionVM's platform took design cues fromsupercomputers by placinghypervisor storage and compute on the samephysical servers.[27] These are backed by adecentralisedInfiniBandfabric.[28] This improves network reliability and performance, and allows for rapid rollover between physical hosts forhigh availability.

Features

[edit]

Rebranded panel

[edit]

To end users, the base of the platform consists of aweb panel, where customers are able to deploy virtual machines. For resellers, the logos and theme can be modified to suit their own branding.[29]

Instances

[edit]

From the panel, users can deploy preconfigured instances with their chosenoperating system and requiredmemory. Additionalstorage disks andIP addresses can be created separately, then assigned to new or existing instances. After shutting down, further resources can be allocated orscaled down.[29][30]

Access

[edit]

Instances can be accessedout-of-band via a web-basedserial console orVNC session. Access is also available via ovm_ctl, an open source command line interface available fromGitHub[20] and thepip package manager.[22]

Linux machines come preconfigured withSSH, and Windows withRDP forremote access.

Templates

[edit]

Instances can be provisioned from a series of predefined templates, which can be customised if required. They include:[31]

Vyatta templates are officially supported forsoftware-definedlogical networking between instances.

API

[edit]

A publicAPI exists for controlling instances.Open sourcePython bindings are available onGitHub.[20]
