Oreste Giorgi (19 May 1856 – 30 December 1924) was aCardinal of theRoman Catholic Church and was formerMajor Penitentiary of Apostolic Penitentiary.[1]
Oreste Giorgi was born inValmontone,Italy. He was educated at thePontifical Roman Seminary,Rome.
He was ordained to thepriesthood on 21 December 1878. He served as a faculty member of the Roman College, from 1879 to 1891. He also served as an official at theApostolic Penitentiary from December 1891. He was createdPrivy chamberlain supra numerum on 9 February 1897. He was raised to the level ofDomestic prelate of His Holiness on 8 October 1903 and finally to the level ofProtonotary apostolic on 5 November 1903. He was theundersecretary of theCongregation for Bishops from 3 June 1907 as well as his duties at the congregation he was anAuditor of theRoman Rota. He was appointed as the Secretary of theCongregation of the Council on 7 December 1911.
He was created and proclaimed Cardinal-Deacon ofSanta Maria in Cosmedin byPope Benedict XV in the consistory of 4 December 1916. He was appointed as Major Penitentiary on 12 March 1918. He participated in theconclave of 1922 that electedPope Pius XI.[2] He opted for the order of cardinal priests and his deaconry was elevatedpro hac vice to title on 25 May 1923.
He was appointedtitular archbishop of Ancyra on 26 April 1924 and was consecrated the next day in theSistine Chapel by Pope Pius. He died in 1924 and is buried in the tomb of his family in the collegiate church, Valmontone.[1]
A school in Rome is named after him.[3]
