Orara River, aperennial stream of theClarence River catchment, is located in theNorthern Rivers district ofNew South Wales,Australia.
Orara River rises on the eastern slopes of theDorrigo Plateau,Great Dividing Range, east ofDorrigo and west ofBoambee, and flows in a meandering course generally north east north and north-west, joined by sixtributaries includingUrumbilum River andKangaroo River, before reaching itsconfluence with the Clarence River, southeast ofCopmanhurst. The river descends 195 metres (640 ft) over its 156 kilometres (97 mi)course;[2] and flows through theDorrigo National Park in its upper reaches.
Major communities along the river includeCoramba,Nana Glen,Glenreagh,Coutts Crossing,Ramornie, andEatonville.[2]
In recent[when?] years, the river has suffered from overuse, particularly due to irrigation projects and the river's use as the major source of water for the city of Coffs Harbour. This has led tosiltation in the river, and the virtual decimation of the river's freshwater fish stocks.[citation needed]
The name of the river is believed to be derived fromUrara, anAboriginal phrase meaning "where the perch live".[1]
