Ophelia Lucy Lovibond (born 19 February 1986) is an English actress. She is known for her roles as Carina in the filmsThor: The Dark World andGuardians of the Galaxy, Izzy Gould in theBBC'sW1A, Patty Failure inDisney'sTimmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, Joyce Prigger inStarz'sMinx, and Kitty Winter inCBS'sElementary.

Early life and education

Lovibond grew up inShepherd's Bush,London in a single-parent household with two siblings, a brother and a sister, and various children fostered by her mother who worked as a chartered psychologist atWormwood Scrubs Prison.[1] She realized that she wanted to be an actor around the age of 10 years old.[2] She attendedLatymer Upper School on a scholarship, and graduated from theUniversity of Sussex with a degree inEnglish Literature in 2008. "I never wanted to go to drama school," Lovibond toldThe Independent in 2015, "The teaching at Latymer was so inspirational I just thought I don't want to stop, I just want to read and learn."[1][3]

Lovibond was part of the Young Blood youth theatre group inHammersmith which countsImogen Poots,Oliver Jackson-Cohen, andCarey Mulligan among its alumni.[4]

In 2000, Lovibond made her television debut at the age of 12 in theChannel 4sitcomThe Wilsons.[2] She lied about her age to be cast as Poppy Wilson oppositeDavid Bradley in the show.[1] "I did [the show] in front of a live studio audience and it was really being thrown in at the deep end which was probably a good thing," she said, "I didn't have any professional training at all. I didn't go to drama school or anything like that, so this was a truly invaluable experience of learning how to work in this profession."[2]

She appeared inElliot Hegarty’sFM and the British period dramaHeartbeat. She also played Izzy Gould in theBBC satireW1A.

In 2014, Lovibond joined the cast ofElementary as Sherlock's newapprentice, Kitty Winter.[5] The show's creator, Robert Doherty, contacted her agent inLos Angeles, California about the role, and later requested her share an audition self-tape. "I did the tape at home with my mum on Wednesday and was offered [the role] on Thursday and then after eight days I flew to New York for five months," she recalled. Lovibond described her time in New York as "straight out of Breakfast at Tiffany's with jazz floating in offWashington Square Park and eccentricGreenwich Village neighbours."[1][2] In addition to being a season three regular on the show, she also had guest appearances in season five and seven.[citation needed]

Lovibond appeared in the first episode, "Sardines", of the British black comedy anthology seriesInside No. 9 (2014–24).[6] In 2016, she played the role of Lady Alexandra Lindo-Parker inSky1 seriesHooten & The Lady.[7] She appeared in a guest role in the 2019 seriesWhiskey Cavalier as MI6 agent Emma Davies.[8] On 16 September 2020, Lovibond was announced as the lead inHBO Max’s period-comedyMinx.[9] In 2022, she playedCarrie Symonds in the TV seriesThis England.

Film

Lovibond made her film debut inRoman Polanski'sOliver Twist in 2005.[10] She had a part in theJohn Lennon biopicNowhere Boy.[11] She played a leading role in the film4.3.2.1,[12] and had roles in the 2011 filmsLondon Boulevard,No Strings Attached andMr. Popper's Penguins. Lovibond played Teri in the BFI/BBC film based on the award-winning novel,8 Minutes Idle, and Carina,The Collector's slave, in the 2014 filmGuardians of the Galaxy.[13][14]

Lovibond played the character Sam Peakes in series 1 ofLobby Land onBBC Radio 4 (broadcast June 2018).

Theatre

In 2015, Lovibond made her professional stage debut in the revival ofLucy Prebble'sThe Effect, directed by Daniel Evans.[15] The following year, she appeared as Elizabeth Barry inStephen Jeffreys'The Libertine at London'sTheatre Royal Haymarket.[16]

In 2017, she played Lois, the eponymous character, inGitha Sowerby'sThe Stepmother.[17] She played Lou inBarney Norris’s 2018 playNightfall[18] and starred in the revival ofDavid Hare'sThe Bay at Nice.[19]

In January 2024, Lovibond starred inJez Butterworth'sThe Hills of California which premiered at theHarold Pinter Theatre in London'sWest End and was later transferred to theBroadhurst Theatre onBroadway.[20][21]

Personal life

Lovibond lived with actorTom Hughes inHampstead, London.[1] She married actor Henry Pettigrew on 1 May 2022. The couple met while starring inThe Effect.[23]
