Onomastus ofSmyrna (Greek:Ὀνόμαστος) was the firstOlympic victor in boxing at the 23rd Olympiad, 688 BC, when this sport was added. According toPhilostratus,[1] Pausanias andEusebius, Onomastus was not only the first Olympic boxing champion but he wrote the rules ofAncient Greek boxing as well. Pausanias adds thatSmyrna was already then part ofIonia.[2] (Onomastos means famous, literally "having a name, onoma").
