Fils Olivier Karekezi (Kinyarwanda pronunciation:[olivjekaɾeˌcezi]ⓘ; born 25 May 1983) is a Rwandan former professional footballer who played as aforward. He is also a former captain of theRwanda national team.
Karekezi signed forHelsingborgs IF in 2005, leaving his native clubAPR FC, and scored five goals in 18 matches during the 2005 season. In 2006, he scored 11 goals for Helsingborg and thereby became their top scorer inAllsvenskan. In January 2008 he transferred toHamarkameratene. In March 2010 he joined the Swedish second division club,Östers IF on a two-year deal.[1]
Karekezi took a pay cut to play for his former club APR. Having previously got US$52,000 (Rwf30.9m) a year at Swedish second division side Östers IF, he agreed a two-year deal with APR in the region of US$24, 000 (Rwf14m) a year.[2]
Towards the end of September 2012, he joinedTunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 clubCA Bizertin in a two-year deal.[3] In July 2013, he announced that he would retire from football when his contract with Bizertin expired in March 2015.[4] However, he joined Swedish third-tier outfitTrelleborgs FF on 22 January 2014.[5]
Karekezi spent two-and-a-half seasons with Swedish sideRåå IF inDivision 3 Södra Götaland.[6] He returned to the club in March 2018, eight months after he had left Råå IF.[6]
Karekezi made his international debut forRwanda in 2000, and represented his country at the2004 African Cup of Nations.
After 13 years with the national team, he announced his retirement from international football in late August 2013.[7]
