Oliver Jose Marmol (born July 2, 1986) is an American professionalbaseballmanager and formerinfielder who is the manager of theSt. Louis Cardinals ofMajor League Baseball (MLB).

Career

Marmol attendedDr. Phillips High School inOrlando, Florida, and was drafted by thePittsburgh Pirates in the 31st round of the2004 MLB draft.[1] He did not sign with the Pirates and attended theCollege of Charleston, where he playedcollege baseball for theCollege of Charleston Cougars. Hebatted .327 in three seasons with the Cougars,[2] and was drafted by theSt. Louis Cardinals in the sixth round of the2007 MLB draft. He played in the Cardinals organization for four seasons, batting .203 as autility player for theBatavia Muckdogs of theClass A-Short SeasonNew York-Penn League, theQuad Cities River Bandits of theClass AMidwest League, and thePalm Beach Cardinals of theClass A-AdvancedFlorida State League.[2][3]

In 2011, Marmol became the hitting coach of theGulf Coast Cardinals of theRookie-levelGulf Coast League. The next season, he became manager of theJohnson City Cardinals of the Rookie-levelAppalachian League,[2] and led the team to the postseason. In 2013, he managed theState College Spikes of the New York-Penn League.[4] He returned to State College in 2014 and won the league's championship.[5] In 2015, he was promoted to manage Palm Beach,[5] and he managed Palm Beach for the 2016 season as well.[6]

The Cardinals named Marmol their first base coach before the 2017 season.[7] Before the 2019 season, the Cardinals shifted Marmol to bench coach.[8] On October 25, 2021, he was promoted to manager of the Cardinals.[9]

In 2022, at 35 years of age, he was the youngest manager in Major League Baseball, five years younger than the next youngest manager,Rocco Baldelli.[10][11] He led the team to a 93–69 record which won the NL Central.[12] The Cardinals lost to the Phillies 2–0 in the NL Wild Card Series.[13] Before the 2024 regular season began, Marmol and the Cardinals agreed to a two-year contract extension through 2026.[14]

Personal life

Marmol is aChristian.[15] Marmol is married to Amber Marmol[15] and they have one daughter together.[16] Marmol has three brothers, 2 of them are pastors and one is a police officer.[15] He and his wife have takenshort-term missions to orphanages inGuatemala andNicaragua.[3]
