Olayinka Koso-Thomas who was born in 1937 is aNigerian-born doctor who lives inSierra Leone.[1] She is internationally recognised for her efforts to abolishfemale genital cutting. In 1998, she shared aPrince of Asturias Award for her work.[2] Her study of the practice inSierra Leone highlights its important role in the traditional initiations of females into bothwomanhood and society in parts ofWest Africa.[3]

Medical Career

Dr. Koso-Thomas pursued a career in medicine and became renowned for her work inobstetrics and gynecology. She gained further recognition for her research onfemale genital mutilation (FGM) and its health impacts, particularly inSierra Leone.[4]

Advocacy and Research on Female Circumcision

Dr. Koso-Thomas gained international recognition for her work onfemale circumcision, also referred to asfemale genital mutilation (FGM). She authored the bookCircumcision of Women: A Strategy for Eradication (1987),[5] which analyse both the cultural and health impacts of FGM and strategies for its eradication in countries where the practice is prevalent.
