TheOfficial Journal of the European Union (theOJEU) is theofficial gazette of record for theEuropean Union (EU). It is published every working day in all of theofficial languages of themember states of the EU. Only legal acts published in theOfficial Journal arebinding.[1]

History

[edit]

It was first published on 30 December 1952 as theOfficial Journal of theEuropean Coal and Steel Community, then renamedOfficial Journal of the European Communities with the establishment of theEuropean Community, before taking its current title when theTreaty of Niceentered into force on 1 February 2003.[2]

Since 1998, the journal has been available online via theEUR-Lex service.[citation needed] On 1 July 2013, published issues of theOfficial Journal began to have legal value only in electronic form, per Article 5 of Regulation (EU) No 216/2013.[3][4] From this date, the printed version has lost its legal value.[5] Each issue is published as a set of documents inPDF/A format (one per official language) plus oneXML document ensuring the overall coherency throughhashes and aqualified electronic signature (a kind ofdigital signature defined inEuropean law) extended with atrusted time stamp.[6][7]

On 1 October 2023, the Official Journal switched to act-by-act publication. In this new production mode, the Official Journal is no longer a collation of acts with a table of contents. Instead, each act is published individually as an authentic Official Journal in PDF format.[8]
