Obirkovia is anextinct genus ofpareiasaur from the latePermianSalarevo Formation of Russia. The genus contains asingle species,O. gladiator, known from a left quadratojugal.
TheObirkoviaholotype specimen, PIN, no. 4546/18, was discovered in sediments of theSalarevo Formation (Vyatka Horizon) at theObirkovo locality inBabushkinskii District ofVologda Oblast, Russia. The specimen consists of a single leftquadratojugal.[2]
In 2005, Bulanov & YashinadescribedObirkovia gladiator as a new genus and species of elginiid pareiasaur based on these fossil remains. Thegeneric name, "''Obirkovia", references the locality where the holotype was discovered. Thespecific name, "gladiator", references thearmed combatants ofAncient Rome.[2]
Cisneros, Dentzien-Dias & Francischini (2021) recoveredObirkovia as an elginiid member of the Pareiasauria, in a clade that also containsElginia spp. andArganaceras. The results of theirphylogenetic analyses are shown in thecladogram below:[3]
