Nyo SawBurmese:ညိုစော,romanizedNyo Hcaw, commonly known asU Nyo Saw, is a Burmese military officer who has been the 13thprime minister of Myanmar and as well as a member of theState Security and Peace Commission since July 2025. A former member of theTatmadaw, he has also been the chairman of theMyanmar Economic Corporation (MEC) since 2022 and also served as a member of theState Administration Council from 2023 to 2025.

Born in an unknown location, Nyo Saw was educated inDefence Services Academy, where he graduated and entered service with a posting as aBrigadier general Staff Officer under Yangon command where he held multiple senior roles. Nyo Saw was promoted toQuartermaster general in 2014 and was also appointed chairman of the Myanmar Economic Corporation that year. He retained both those roles ever after retiring from the army in 2020. In 2023, Nyo Saw was appointed a member of theState Administration Council, the then-ruling military junta of Myanmar.

In July 2025, the State Administration Council was abolished and was replaced by the State Security and Peace Commission, and as well as thestate of emergency. The junta leaderMin Aung Hlaing appointed Nyo Saw prime minister,Minister of National Planning and Economic Development, and a member of the newly formed council. His appointment came as the country was getting ready forgeneral elections later in the year.

Early life and education

Nyo Saw graduated from the 23rd intake of theDefence Services Academy.[1]

Career

Nyo Saw began his career as a grade one general staff officer at the Yangon command.[2] He served as the commandant of theDefence Services Technological Academy and the Defence Services Academy, and also headed the country's central and southern commands.[3]

Nyo Saw served as quartermaster general from 2014 to April 2020, before retiring with the rank oflieutenant general.[1] He was succeeded byKyaw Swar Lin.[4] In the wake of the2015 Myanmar general election, which saw theNational League for Democracy take control of the civilian government, Nyo Saw was integral in awarding government tenders to firms affiliated with military officers.[1]

As of August 2022, he serves as the chairman of theMyanmar Economic Corporation, and holds senior roles at the military-ownedMyanma Economic Holdings Limited andInnwa Bank.[1][5] In July 2023, he was appointed as the regime's chief business advisor.[6]

On 25 September 2023, he was appointed to theState Administration Council alongside Maung Maung Aye, replacingSoe Htut andMoe Myint Tun, who were sacked following acorruption probe.[7][8][9]

On July 31, 2025, a meeting of theNational Defence and Security Council was convened. Following this, Acting President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing signed and issued an order announcing the formation of the new Union Government in which Nyo Saw was appointed as the Prime Minister. In addition to his role as Prime Minister, he will also concurrently serve as the Union Minister of the Ministry of National Planning.[10]

Personal life

Nyo Saw is married to San San Aye and have three children.[1] They are non-executive shareholders of Apex Fair International Company Limited.[11]

Personal sanctions

On December 11, 2023, theEuropean Council imposed personal restrictions on Nyo Saw due to his direct contribution to dismantling and undermining democracy and stability in Myanmar as a member of theState Administration Council, a body established by the junta to facilitate and legitimize their rule over Myanmar afterthe 2021 coup d'état.[12]
