Protected area in South Australia
Nullarbor Plain CliffsNullarbor Wilderness Protection Area is aprotected area in the Australian state ofSouth Australia located about 270 kilometres (170 miles) west ofCeduna in the locality ofNullarbor.[4]
The wilderness protection area was proclaimed under theWilderness Protection Act 1992 on 6 June 2013 on land previously proclaimed under theNational Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 as theNullarbor National Park and theNullarbor Regional Reserve.[5][3]
It is bounded in the west by theWestern Australia - South Australian state border, in the south by the coastline adjoining theGreat Australian Bight, to the east by theYalata Indigenous Protected Area and the Nullarbor Regional Reserve, and to the north by the Nullarbor National Park and the Nullarbor Regional Reserve.[6][4][7]
Two heritage-listed sites within the area,Koonalda Cave and theKoonalda Homestead Complex, are listed on theSouth Australian Heritage Register; the former is also listed on theAustralian National Heritage List.[8][9][10]
The wilderness protection area is classified as anIUCN Category Ib protected area.[1]
