Nukutere was one of theMāori migration canoes that broughtPolynesian migrants toNew Zealand.Nukutere is one of the lesser known canoes. However, the descendants of theNukutere migrants can be found inNgāi Tūhoe,Ngāti Porou and in other easternBay of Plentyiwi.
According toNgāti Awa traditions, theNukutere landed at Waiaua in theBay of Plenty, bringing with it supplies oftaro, along with specimens ofkaraka andti plants.Te Whakatōhea traditions say that Tauturangi came to New Zealand aboard theNukutere. Tauturangi was the ancestor of Tūtāmure, whose descendants would eventually form theTe Whakatōhea iwi.
