Nukapedia, also known asFallout Wiki, is awiki about theFalloutfictional universe. It covers all of theFallout video games, as well as allFallout related content. The Fallout Wiki runs onMediaWiki and is currently part of theFandom network.[1] The site is also available in several other languages, includingBulgarian,Chinese,Dutch,French,German,Hebrew,Hungarian,Italian,Japanese,Norwegian,Polish,Portuguese,Russian,Spanish,Swedish andTurkish andUkrainian.
Originally named simplyThe Vault, the wiki was split into two independently-run sites:The Vault andNukapedia, in 2011. The two wikis decided to merge in December 2019, "completing" the process of importing The Vault content to Nukapedia in January 2022.
The Vault was founded byPaweł Dembowski[2] and launched on February 7, 2005, initially hosted byFallout fansite Duck and Cover,[2] as a general source of information about theFallout universe, focusing mostly on information about theFallout world, as depicted inFallout andFallout 2. Its purpose was to continue the work started byFallout 2 developerChris Avellone in hisFallout Bible, which was meant to be a reference guide to theFalloutfictional universe, but was abandoned after Avellone leftBlack Isle Studios.[3] Since the launch, the wiki has expanded to include the entireFallout series, both in terms of the fictional universe and in terms of gameplay information and help.
In 2007, because the original host could no longer take the wiki constantly being targeted for various exploits by spammers as well as other attackers, the Vault moved toWikia,[4] and became one of Wikia's most popular wikis after the release ofFallout 3 byBethesda Softworks in October 2008.[2] It has broken previous popularity records for gaming wikis on the weekend after the release ofFallout: New Vegas in October 2010, with daily page views topping at 8.8 million[3] (the previous record, 5 million, belonged toWoWWiki).[5] Within the first week of the game's release, the site had 2.5 million unique visitors.[6] In an interview withEurogamer, the wiki's founder has stated that it has even been used as a source by developers of recentFallout games, citing one example of lore inFallout 3 being influenced by The Vault.[2] The Vault has also released some previously unknown information on canceledFallout projects like theFallout Extreme 2000 console game[7] and the 1998 cancelledFallout film project,[8] as well as using itsYouTube channel[9] and other social media to make available audio and videoFallout Media. Nukapedia has also worked to make available severalFallout music tracks andcutscenes on its YouTube channel.
In October 2011, over disagreements with Wikia's social focus its founder and many of the administrators moved The Vault moved to FalloutWiki.com, and laterfallout.gamepedia.com, both hosted byCurse.[4][10] The Wikia version remained, now under the name "Nukapedia". In January 2012, Dembowski was globally banned from Wikia for posting about Curse-hosted wikis on Wikia.[11]
In 2019, after the Curse network of wikis was purchased by Wikia and both The Vault and Nukapedia became hosted by the same company, administrators of both wikis announced a project to merge the two previously split sites into one again, under the name "Fallout Wiki" (subtitled "Nukapedia + The Vault").[12][non-primary source needed] In January 2022, it was announced that the merge was complete and the site will continue forward under Nukapedia branding.[13][non-primary source needed] The original version of The Vault prior to the merge announcement remains archived.[14][non-primary source needed]
The Vault admins had generally been displeased with Wikia's move towards becoming more of a social network than a wiki. They wanted more freedom on deciding how the wiki was being run, and more of a focus on content instead of social features. They wanted to focus on gaming instead of Wikia's recent focus on lifestyles... Pawel says the split was amicable at first and he has tried to stay on good terms with Wikia. However, as Pawel and his team continue to produce more original content at The Vault and more and more people leave Wikia's Nukapedia to follow Pawel to The Vault's new home, things have started to become bitter.
Pawel is now employed by Curse. He... took a position as Curse's "Wiki Team Lead." That means he's now in charge of all the Curse wikis, including the one for Cobalt, a game published by Mojang. Mojang links to Curse's wiki as their official wiki, but Wikia was claiming that their wiki was the official Cobalt wiki. Hence Pawel's comment. Next thing you know he was globally banned from Wikia without warning.
