Northumbria was an EnglishEuropean Parliament constituency that existed from 1979 to 1999. Prior to its uniform adoption ofproportional representation in1999, the United Kingdom usedfirst-past-the-post for theEuropean elections in England,Scotland andWales. TheEuropean Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had oneMember of the European Parliament each.
