TheNorthern Line is acommuter rail service inSouth Africa that in theCape Town metropolitan area and its surroundings and is operated byMetrorail Western Cape. Northern Line services operate from central Cape Town toBellville, and then from Bellville along three different routes. The first route runs along the main Cape Town–De Aar railway line toPaarl andWellington. The second route passes throughStellenbosch to terminate atMuldersvlei station on the main line, while the third also passes throughSomerset West to terminate inStrand.^[1]

Operations on the Northern Line halted in March 2020 in response to theCOVID-19 pandemic. Operations resumed in late 2021 with trains on the relief main line pastCentury City andMonte Vista terminating atKraaifontein. In early 2022, operations on the old main line throughSalt River andMaitland as well as operations toWellington resumed. In November 2023, operations toStrand resumed. In 2024, operations on the line toMuldersvlei station throughStellenbosch resumed. As of September 2024, all segments of the Northern Line are operational.

Most Northern Line trains travel fromCape Town station along the old main line throughSalt River,Maitland,Goodwood andParow toBellville station. Trains on the Wellington route continue from Bellville along the main line throughBrackenfell andKraaifontein, and then through the farmland outside the metropolitan area to reach the towns ofPaarl andWellington.^[2]

Other trains branch south-east after Bellville, passing throughKuils River toEerste River; From there, some turn north to pass throughStellenbosch and terminate atMuldersvlei station on the main line, while others continue south-east throughSomerset West along the line towardsCaledon. Shortly after Somerset West they branch from this line to terminate atStrand on theFalse Bay coast.^[2]

The Northern Line also includes a service along the relief main line from Cape Town pastCentury City andMonte Vista to Bellville.^[2]

The line is made up of1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) track, electrified with 3,000 V DCoverhead catenary; most of the routes are at least double track, except for the Strand and Stellenbosch lines beyond Eerste River. Services are operated mostly byelectric multiple units ofClass 5M2.
